Lot's sons-in-law thought he was joking

Lot (Abraham's nephew) lived in a very lawless city of Sodom. It was a city filled with people that did not care about God or His ordinance - a city of “anything goes”. The city has a notorious history. Even those who don't read the Bible know that the word “sodomy” came from the name of this city because sodomy was commonplace, among other detestable practices. God eventually judged the city along with another city, Gomorrah.

Some modern scholars have tried to suggest that God did not judge Sodom because of their sodomy practices but because of their arrogance and lack of hospitality. They rely on some prophets (e.g. Prophet Ezekiel in 16:49-50) who later spoke about Sodom that the word sodomy was never mentioned. The essence of this argument is not clear to me, but this is an era where people interpret scriptures to suit their own ideas or agenda, but the standard of God remains sure. “Let everyone that nameth the name of Christ departs from iniquity”. 2 Tim 2:19. We know clearly from the scriptures that God doesn't approve of sodomy. Romans 1:26-27. Even Ezekiel 16:49-50, relied upon by these scholars, mentioned they did “abominable” things as part of the reason God judged them. We know the wrath of God is revealed against all ungodliness and abominable practices. Romans 1:18

Prior to the judgment, two angels in form of men had appeared in Lot’s house and he hosted them. The men of Sodom invaded his house seeking to have sex with them thinking they were men like them. Lot pleaded with them not to do so and offered them his two daughters who were virgins but that didn't impress these men. They wanted to sleep with the two men rather than the two virgins. They were so insistent that they were going to prevail unless they were interrupted. The Angels struck the men blind and brought in Lot. At that point, they had to disclose immediately their intentions to Lot who was still ignorant. They were on a mission to execute God's punishment on the city, but they needed to get Lot and his family out because Abraham had interceded for him. They gave him the opportunity to get his family out before the judgment.

With this divine Intel of an impending judgment on Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot rushed to speak with his prospective sons-in-law. The Bible recorded that they thought he was joking. See Genesis 19:14. So sad. They could have escaped the judgment, but they thought he was joking and did nothing about the “information”. Eventually, Lot left without them, and they were smitten in the judgment. Gen 19:24-25.

It is concerning that there are people who wake up, go to work or about their daily activities with no thoughts about God and his intentions already disclosed. They're a law unto themselves and do not care about God's ordinances. As far as they are concerned, all these ideas about Jesus or His death or resurrection or second coming or Hell are joke taken too far. Like Lot's sons-in-law, they also think it is a joke. Let me tell you, if you are in this category, this thing is not a joke! The King is coming, and He is coming to judge the world. Run for your life. You say, how? Run to Jesus. He will save you from the wrath that is coming. The King is coming! The King is coming! Revelation 1:7 "Look, Jesus is coming with the clouds, and everyone will see him, even those who stabbed him. And all peoples of the earth will cry loudly because of him. Yes, this will happen! Amen"

Don't take it as a joke. Jesus is coming for His people and whoever's name is not found in the book of life is thrown into lake of fire. Rev 20:15. It is not a joke. It will happen. Other things said had come to pass and this will too.

If you're ready to accept the testimony of Jesus and trust in Him to save you, you can have your name written in Jesus' book of life this moment. You will not have to partake in the wrath that is coming. Jesus is calling you today. His love for you is unparalleled. He already paid the price for your sins. Just come as you are. Don’t assume it is a joke or untrue like the sons-in-law of Lot. It was too late when their doubts were clear. You lose nothing if you believe. You gain forgiveness, freedom and most importantly, eternal life. John 5:24: "Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me has eternal life."

If you want to come to Jesus, make this your sincere prayer:

Lord Jesus, I accept your testimony. I have been told that if I come, you will accept me and save me from the wrath that is to come. I have come now. I believe you. Accept me and save me by your grace. I receive you as my Lord and saviour. Help me to get to know you more and walk with you the rest of my life. Thank you, Jesus.
