Jesus is not a product of any culture.
September 27, 2023
The Jesus of the bible that we preach as the way of salvation is not a product of Jewish culture or religion though he came in the flesh from that region. It's not a religious idea of some folks who just desire followership like some may have done. He is God's sole provision for the redemption of mankind and restoration of their dignity.
In my home country, there are adherents of traditional religions, atheist, academics, and regular folks who opposed Jesus simply because they see him as a vestige of colonialism. Colonialism came with a lot of foreign stuff such as Western education and civilization and a lot of people especially the pan Africanist resisted the idea, asserting their own culture as good enough and not inferior to the ways of the Europeans. This was a recurring theme in most African literatures in the mid-20th Century. They see Jesus as a byproduct of the colonial masters and because they resisted the imperialists, securing independence, they resisted Jesus. In their opinion, the Europeans can't belittle or suppress our culture and traditions in deference to theirs. I fully agree the culture of the Whiteman is not superior to any other race’s culture. What those proponents however fail to understand is that Jesus is not the idea of the Whiteman or even the Jewish people. The whites and the Jew need to accept Jesus just like the blacks need to. If anyone refuses Jesus, they are simply refusing God's provision for their salvation. It has nothing to do with racial or religious superiority.
John 3:17-18 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
Jesus is not about religion superiority complex if there is anything like that. The message of Christ is not about putting Christianity above other religions. This imagined contest is why some folks may argue against accepting Jesus because, as far as they are concerned, how can you tell me your religion is superior to or better than mine? They fail to understand that a Christian by religion who does not accept Jesus stands in the same position as any other religion adherents who fail to embrace Jesus. [See scripture referenced above.]
There are people who identify as Christians by religion and that's just it – nothing more. They may even bear the name of Jesus or a Jewish name. A Christian by mere religion still have to decide to either accept what Jesus did or chose to trust in his religion as a Christian. You say, what difference does that make? The thing about this message is that you're not one with the father just because you're a Christian by religion. As a matter of fact, what Jesus brought is not a religion. What He brought is a restoration of relationship with the father. Man lost it through the first man. Religion will not bring that relationship back. Jesus came with the answer and His person will have to be received for the relationship to be restored. That is what being born again or saved is about. Romans 10:9-10. It is not about accepting a new religion. It's about accepting Jesus as the Lord of your life and the pathway to the father, the creator of heaven and earth.
I guess what I am trying to say is that all men irrespective of the religion they identify with require a relationship with the person of Jesus including Christians by religion. In case, you are saying that your religion or forefathers have nothing to do with Jesus, you're not the first with such a thought. The woman at the well told Jesus something like that but Jesus said to her that if she could appreciate who Jesus is, she will jettison all those agelong tradition of bias and embrace the salvation Jesus brings. And who is Jesus for you to appreciate? He is God's only provision for salvation and restoration. Acts 4:12. He is not the idea of Christians or any culture or any man to show superiority over another. This is not a contest or superiority complex; it is the way to eternal life for everyone. No other person or leader (dead or alive) has an answer for the question of sin and death other than Jesus who died, rose again and now alive for ever. Doesn’t It make a lot of sense to follow the one who has the answers?
Acts 4:12 “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
