What's in Meth?

I was having lunch with Ben (not real name) some days ago and we got talking on a few issues. At some point, our discussion shifted to drug addiction problem in downtown Edmonton. I wondered aloud why a lot of people take meth despite the destructive effects it has on their lives. He gave me the answer a former girlfriend of his who was into it. She was quoted to have said, it makes her high and that “nothing beats the feeling”. Ben, telling me further the devastating effects of meth on people, said:

When you get drunk, you’re still able to go to work in the morning. I have been drunk before. But when you take meth, you’re out. You’re unable to go to work the next morning and on and on like that…The rate of recidivism is high, it’s like 99% when it’s meth.”

I think there is one Igbo proverb that says, no one remains drunk until the morning. So, I can understand the comparison Ben was driving at. But more importantly, I could see the devastating boomerang effects of meth in a man’s life. When one is unable to go to work, one is unable to keep a job. Soon, the fellow is unable to keep up with the bills. Before long, he becomes homeless and out of desperation to feed or meet needs, he goes shoplifting and consequently, he is involved in the criminal justice system. They lose everything – their family. It never ends well when it comes to meth.

Meanwhile, from the beginning, this was not so. The one who made them did not design them to go that way. God has good plans for every creature of His. Genesis 1:31. The devil deceived people into abusing this stuff and by so doing mess with their lives. What was intended for good was hijacked and through the deception and blindness, they’re hooked to what will destroy them. At the end of our chat, I concluded it would take a miracle to get someone out of meth addiction. I believe in miracle because I have seen what the power of God can do, and yet there is more. Too good to not believe!

If you have never been in touch with meth, I plead with you, don’t go into it. Don’t experiment with it. If you’re dealing with any issue, don’t use it as escapism drug. Get help, go for counselling. Get to God’s house and ask for help. Use our prayer page. If you’re angry at the system or disappointed in yourself or someone else, don’t take it out on yourself this way. If someone is luring you, run for your life. It’s that serious.

If you have been involved with meth and you are still able to read and comprehend what is written here, that means you are lucid now. You can call for help before the craving drown you any further. There is a story of Peter in the bible who was drowning in the sea, and he cried out to Jesus for help. I tell you, there is power in the name of Jesus. That power is greater than the craving of meth. That power can set you free for good. Right now, cry to him. Say with all your heart, Lord Jesus, save me! I believe you. He can rescue you and give you a new beginning. People of God all over this country are praying and rooting for your freedom. Without you and your contribution to our world, we are missing something. Don’t give up on yourself. We are standing with you in prayers. Ask for prayers using our prayer page. We believe in rehabilitation efforts, and we also believe in the name of Jesus, because when he sets you free, you’re free indeed. God bless you.
